Getting to USI

You can reach Lugano by train, by car and by plane.


By Train

Lugano is one hour away from Milan and 2 hours 40 minutes from Zurich. Trains run every hour ( From Lugano railway station, you can either walk down to the city centre or take the funicular which connects the railway station and the city centre. Follow Via Pessina on your left and cross Piazza Dante. Take Via Pretorio on your left until you have reached Corso Pestalozzi and the main bus station. Take either bus no. 5 direction Viganello (get off at the Ospedale italiana stop) or no. 3 direction Pregassona (Sacro Cuore stop). Both stops are a minute’s walk from USI. 


By Car

Lugano is served by the main motorway which links Northern Switzerland and Italy (; From the A2 motorway, either take Lugano Sud exit and follow directions for Lugano centro. After Casino Kursaal (left side) and Palazzo dei Congressi (right side), turn right on viale Carlo Cattaneo. At the indication Università turn left in via Pasquale Lucchini and continue till you reach the University.
You can also leave the motorway at the Lugano Nord exit; then follow the indications for Lugano Centro. After the underpass by the railway station keep on the left lane, following the signs for Università until you reach via Giuseppe Buffi and the University.

  • Malpensa Airport
    Most European airlines serve Milan’s Malpensa Airport. Shuttle buses connect Malpensa and Lugano (;
  • Bergamo Airport
    Bergamo’s airport Orio al Serio ( is the destination of some low-budget airlines. From there, you can reach Milan by coach, where you can catch a train to Lugano.
