About USI and Cardiocentro

USI

Cardio e-TeC will be held at the beautiful campus of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano (www.unisi.ch). As a public institution, USI is part of the Swiss university system, which consists of nine cantonal universities and two Federal Institutes of Technology.

Today, USI comprises four Faculties: Economics, Communication Sciences and Informatics in Lugano, and Architecture in Mendrisio.

ALaRI is the Advanced Learning and Research Institute at the Faculty of Informatics-USI. It is the outcome of effective synergies initiated and shared by three principal actors: the European academic world, the American academic world and the high-tech industry. The main research areas are hardware/software design of embedded micro-systems. Through its collaborative relations with Politecnico di Milano and the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, as well as its active research programmes, ALaRI has successfully bridged the gap between information (software) technologies and electronic (engineering) technologies, exploring cutting-edge topics and focussing its research on pragmatic industrial problems. ALaRi offers specialist training in pioneering information technologies in Embedded Systems Design.

The Institute of Communication and Health (ICH) carries out theoretical and applied research in communication sciences. Its two main research objectives are to maintain and improve individual health and to develop corporate and social programmes promoting healthcare and health policy. The Institute’s research is characterised by an interdisciplinary integration of humanistic traditions and social sciences, and builds on the excellence of its conceptual and empirical studies in the field of health. ICH includes the Health Care Communication Laboratory and the Center for Applied Research in Communication and Health, which are committed, respectively, to core theoretical issues and to projects with a close view to community’s health promotion. ICH is also involved in organizing graduate (Master’s) courses as part of USI’s degree curricula, and it coordinates a doctoral school for advanced research programmes.

Cardiocentro

Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino (www.cardiocentro.org) is one of the most important Swiss heart surgery centres and an authority in the treatment of cardiovascular patients in Ticino, Switzerland. It is managed by a non-profit foundation although it is part and parcel of the cantonal health care system. It offers a full spectrum of high-quality, innovative treatments in Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital is the only centre for the cure of acute myocardial infarction with percutaneous angioplasty in the entire Southern region of Switzerland and, in particular, in Canton Ticino. Special care is provided to patients with chronic heart disease with the use of human stem cells and to heart failure patients with stem cell therapy, implantation of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, and more recently with percutaneous treatment of mitral and aortic valves.

USI Executive Center

Cardio e-TeC lectures are held in the Executive Center at USI – a dedicated space set aside for executive education. Modern, air conditioned classrooms with high-quality audiovisual equipment provide a comfortable learning environment. The Center is also equipped with areas for group work, a lounge, wireless computer network and internet access.
